Shop Duct Temperature Sensors
Duct temperature sensors measure the temperature of high-velocity air just before it enters a room, or as it leaves the building. They are essential data gatherers for any Building Automation System (BAS) or HVAC controller. When sensors drift out of calibration or fail, building occupants experience unstable temperatures, so finding the exact replacement thermistor or resistance temperature detector (RTD) needs to be quick and efficient.
Blackhawk Supply cuts the waiting and red tape involved in sourcing from a local distributor. We are a direct solution for ordering duct temperature sensors online, with a ready-to-ship inventory of trusted brands.
Precision Climate Control for Every Application
To ensure precise climate control, these specialized sensors are strategically placed throughout the HVAC network to handle the following critical applications:
Air Handling Units
In commercial Air Handling Units (AHUs), duct temperature sensors are the primary source of feedback for the system's control logic. Sensors are installed at three critical points, the return air duct, the mixed air chamber and the supply air duct. By continuously comparing these three readings, the BAS can precisely modulate the chilled water and hot water valves on the AHU coils, ensuring the exact target temperature is delivered to the building.
VAV Box Control
While the central AHU controls the bulk air temperature, downstream duct sensors are required to manage the microclimates of individual rooms. These sensors are installed inside the ductwork just after a Variable Air Volume (VAV) box. As the VAV box opens or closes its damper to adjust airflow to a specific zone or activates its local reheat coil, the duct sensor provides immediate feedback to the controller.
Economizer Operation
Duct sensors play a massive role in reducing a building's overall energy consumption by facilitating free cooling through economizer operation. Sensors are placed in the outside air intake and return air ducts. If the outdoor temperature is cooler and less humid than the indoor return air, the BAS recognizes that it can cool the building naturally. It signals the economizer dampers to pull in the cold outside air, allowing the facility to shut down its energy-heavy chillers and compressors entirely.
Duct Averaging
In large commercial ductwork, cold air may sink to the bottom while warm air rises to the top, creating stratification. If you put a standard, single-point sensor in a stratified duct, it might send a false, overly hot or cold reading to the computer. To solve this, technicians use flexible, multipoint averaging sensors. These long sensors calculate the true average temperature of the entire air stream.
